Airbnb bans using listings to throw house parties

Before you get any smart ideas about throwing a house party, Airbnb have announced the Global Party Ban – which caps occupancy at 16 guests per booking and consequences for not following the rules.

Already 73 percent of Airbnb listings ban house parties in their house rules, however all listings will now have to be compliant immediately and for the foreseeable future.

Last year, the company started preventing guests under 25 with no positive reviews to book entire home listings locally, plus stricter measures for guests to follow.

While Airbnb used to have “event-friendly” and “parties and events allowed” filters on its website, they have since been removed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Airbnb Global Party Ban Policy

  • Parties are now prohibited on all future bookings
  • Occupancy at Airbnb listings will be capped at 16 people. This is primarily relevant to larger homes that we previously allowed to list as able to accommodate 16+ people.
  • Airbnb are currently scoping a potential exception process for specialty and traditional hospitality venues (i.e. boutique hotels)
  • Guests will be informed about Airbnb’s party rules and informed that they may be legally pursued by Airbnb if they violate our policy. This work is currently being operationalized and will be rolled out in the near future.

In the past, Airbnb was forced to limit antisocial behaviour after a numbers of incidents in the US and Canada saw house parties create unnecessary damage and violence.
