I first noticed Afrihost AirMobile on one of those digital ads at Cape Town International Airport while waiting for a flight. The promise of free data caught my eye, and as someone who is always looking for better connectivity options, I decided to give it a try.
Signing up was relatively simple, but you do need to submit a number of documents before activation. If you need connectivity as soon as you land, it's better to activate before you arrive in the country.
What really sold me, besides the 8GB of free data, was the chance to use the instant eSIM option on my Google Pixel 9a. The phone isn't on the official support list, but I was connected within minutes. As a heavy data user, I got through the 8GB quite quickly. That's when I noticed they offer 6GB for just R60, which is by far the best deal in the country.
Free signup deal
Right now, new AirMobile users get:
• 3GB free data (the standard offer for new users)
• R10 free airtime
• Extra 5GB when you use the promo code evan5, for 8GB free in total
Promotions can change or end at any time, and free sign-up offers are limited per person, so check the current terms on the Afrihost AirMobile page before you sign up.
Impressions
After using it for a few weeks across different parts of South Africa, here's what stood out:
Fast eSIM activation: I downloaded the eSIM profile straight after signing up and was online in under 5 minutes while waiting to board my flight.
Physical SIM option: If you prefer, they'll courier a SIM to you. That's handy if your phone doesn't support eSIM.
Reliable coverage: Solid speeds in the cities (Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban) and decent reception in smaller towns.
Great for travellers: The free data makes this perfect for visitors who want connectivity without contracts or big costs. If you use 8GB or less, you could essentially get a month of travel data for free.
