What was meant to be a night of pounding bass and celebration at one of northern Switzerland’s biggest techno gatherings turned into a crime scene early Sunday morning, as gunfire erupted outside the annual Aarau Rave, leaving one person dead and five others wounded.

The violence unfolded just before 3:00 a.m. local time, as the seventh edition of the open-air event was drawing to a close at the Pferderennbahn Aarau (Aarau racecourse). The lineup had featured a strong roster of Swiss electronic talent, including Henri Bergmann, Ronny Grauer, Sammadi, and Lell Nahar, with Lostandfound and a Tekibo b2b Pencilin9no set keeping the crowd moving into the early hours.

Around 3,500 ravers had turned out for the event, which kicked off Saturday afternoon and ran through the night. But the atmosphere shifted violently just as the final tracks were fading out.

Cantonal police say shots were fired into the large crowd near the end of the night. According to Swiss newspaper Blick, witnesses initially thought the noise was fireworks, a common sound at outdoor parties, until someone shouted for everyone to get down.

Police were alerted around 2:30 a.m., according to spokesperson Pascal Wenzel, with fellow spokeswoman Vanessa Rumpold confirming that the shots came from within the gathering itself, not from outside the venue.

One person was killed and five others were injured, some seriously, authorities confirmed via social media. Emergency crews and fire personnel quickly established a wide security cordon around the racecourse, and nearby residents were asked to steer clear while the operation unfolded.

The search for suspects has expanded well beyond Aarau. An AFP journalist reported seeing armed officers stationed along a highway as far as 18 miles from the scene, as police cast a wide net across the region.

As of Sunday, no suspects had been identified or arrested. Police say the perpetrator’s identity and motive remain unknown, and they have appealed to attendees who may have captured photos or video from the night to come forward.

“The search for the unknown perpetrator is ongoing,” cantonal police said, adding that the precise circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation.

Aarau, the capital of Aargau canton, is a quiet city of about 22,300 residents located roughly 29 miles west of Zurich. The annual rave at the Schachen racecourse has grown into a staple of the region’s electronic music calendar, regularly drawing thousands to its grassy grounds for a marathon of techno and house.

For now, what should have been a celebratory weekend has become a somber scene, and a community of ravers is left waiting for answers.

This is a developing story. Details, including the identity of the victim and any suspects, may change as Swiss authorities continue their investigation.
