Portugal occupies a unique and cherished place in the history of global psychedelic and Goa trance music. In the early 1990s, a tight-knit community of DJs, artists, and organisers built a scene that would go on to earn the country a reputation as something of a spiritual home for the genre — eventually giving rise to Boom Festival in 1997, which today draws tens of thousands of attendees from across the world. Paulo Lopes was among those who helped lay those foundations.
