Esoteric Festival has gone into voluntary administration after the sudden cancellation of its 2025 event in Donald, Victoria. The company behind it, Esoteric Festival Pty Ltd, owes more than A$2.8 million to ticketholders, suppliers, contractors, and staff.
The collapse follows the last-minute revocation of the festival’s occupancy permit by a municipal building surveyor. With 11,000 expected attendees, the permit was pulled just days before gates were set to open, citing health and safety concerns tied to a previous gastro outbreak in 2024. At the time, around 2,000 attendees were already on site or waiting to get in.

- Around A$540,000 owed to contractors and suppliers
- Over A$100,000 in unpaid staff entitlements
- Only A$55,000 cash on hand
- A$20,000 in physical assets (mostly a ride-on mower)
The company is now being managed by administrators from Worrells. Their job is to assess the financial damage and decide whether the business can be sold, restructured, or liquidated.

Festival director Sam Goldsmith has blamed bureaucracy and local politics for the event’s collapse. He has encouraged supporters to keep their tickets in the hope of a future revival.
Esoteric’s failure comes amid growing pressure on music festivals across Australia. Rising costs, tighter regulations, and unpredictable council decisions have caused multiple events to cancel or scale down in recent years.
Whether Esoteric can return in 2026 depends on finding new investors or buyers. Right now, the outlook is uncertain.
