The latest generation of Sony's popular wireless headphones proves to be one of the best.

Sony has been a flagship in the audiovisual sector for generations. Their WH-1000XM range, first released 5 years ago, has seen minimal tweaks in each itteration over the years. The latest WH-1000XM5 might be the biggest deviation yet, but they are only for the better.

Design

The new WH-1000XM5 features an elegent design, available in Black or Silver. The headband is much rounder than previous iterations. The earcups have smooth features that make it look calming.

On the inside they’re much larger than previous counterparts, perfect for those with big ears. At just 250g in weight, they feel light as a feather on your head. It’s arguably one of the best wireless headphones design in recent years.

When not using the headphones, they rotate 180 degrees into their carry case. The material of the case is nice, with a loop on the outside. It packs away fairly small when you are using the headphones.

Battery & Charging

The Sony WH-1000XM5 features an impressive battery life, with tests running just short of 30 hours. A quick 3 minute charge will give you about 3 hours of playback. Sony claims it takes about 3 and a half hours to fully juice the headphones.

Sound Quality

In terms of sound quality, Sony delivers in this department, including the ability to customize the EQ, so you can finetune the sound to your liking. However, it’s hard to ignore these use a 30mm driver unit, smaller than the Apple Airpod Max 40mm driver. But those come at a $150 premium. Sony have skimped on the DAC and Amp in this unit, so theres warmth in the midrange and good bass.

If you’re someone that is regularly in noisy environments, like an office or public transport, the noise concellation on the WH-1000XM5 is absolute fantastic. In most instances it’s highly unlikely that you’ll hear a thing. I tested this on a busy train and never heard a thing while listening to music.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a new pair of premium wireless headphones, its hard to ignore the Sony WH-1000XM5. In comparison to the AirPods Max, the battery lasts longer, they sound just as good, and they are much more comfortable and lighter on your head. The ANC performance is absolute fantastic and hard to beat. Decent charging times too. What’s there not to like?
