Did you know in South Africa there are five to six million coffee drinkers, accounting for 10% of the total population? That’s why it’s no surprise that CBD coffee is the latest product to hit the shelves since regulation changed last year.
CBD is one of the many natural cannabinoids found in the cannabis plan. CBD-infused drinks are now readily available to purchase at coffee shops or directly from companies like Canna Coffee.
For some people, infusing CBD with coffee might seem like an oxymoron, but if you’re a cannabis and coffee connoisseur like us, it might be the perfect way to start your morning.
If you’re prone to jitters from caffeine, CBD might actually be able to help and make the experience more pleasurable. CBD in combination with caffeine gives you alertness without the crazy shakes.
Canna Coffee Company
To test out CBD coffee for ourselves, we ordered a bag of freshly roasted Italian beans from Canna Coffee Company in Kommetjie, Cape Town.
The company conveniently supplies both ground and beans, plus decaffeinated (if you don’t like caffeine) as well as Nespresso compatible pods that can be popped in a machine.
Since there’s only CBD and no THC, this coffee won’t have any psychoactive effects. The packaging recommends adding 10g of coffee per cup, which gives 10mg of CBD.
Simpy add the ground beans to a french press and wait for the brew to begin.
Canna Coffee uses a blend of organic, Arabica and Robusta beans. They are roasted to give low acidicity while maintaining a potent, creamy tasting coffee with long lasting aromatic flavours.
Coffee takes about 10 minutes to start working, and in under an hour your body will have processed most of the caffeine. CBD on the other hand, takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour to kick in when ingested, and can last for several hours, so the two work together well.
Personally we found the Italian Roast from Canna Coffee to be pleasurable, and there’s none of the usual jitters associated with regular coffee. While CBD coffee comes at a premium price, it’s definitely something that we might drink every now and then to start our day.
